Who takes online courses at Guilford Tech Community College?

Do I have to be an eDegree student to take online classes?
No, any enrolled GTCC student may take one or more online classes. All students interested in registering for online classes is required to complete the “Online Success Seminar” to be able to register for them during course registration season. What does “Limited Enrollment” mean in the college catalog?
Limited Enrollment programs have additional steps for students to take before they are considered for admission. Students must follow the guidelines and requirements according to the timelines given in order to apply for them. Do I become an eDegree Student once I complete and submit my questionnaire?
No, all eDegree interested students must complete the mandatory eDegree Readiness Workshop in order to update your student record. Once your questionnaire is submitted, you will receive an automatic confirmation to the email you designated that it was received in our office. You will then receive a second email once the information on your questionnaire is verified explaining how you are placed in the workshop.
How do I sign-up for the eDegree Readiness Workshop?
Answer: All verified eDegree applicants will receive a second email regarding the verification and processing of their questionnaire. Students are then assigned a workshop date by the Online Student Navigator. All materials and information are provided to successfully complete the free two-week online workshop.
Where do I find the contact information for my Department Chair?
You can use the “Employee Search” tool to locate any faculty or staff member at GTCC. There is a basic and an advanced search tool where you can enter a name or department to find who you are looking for. The search results provide the name, title, office hours, phone number, email address, and photograph for your reference.
How do students register for classes each semester?
Registration at GTCC is done by the student. Using WebAdvisor all students have access to the semester courses and class sizes. A student may choose to search for individual classes or use the Express Registration tool to enter classes that are chosen based upon their advisor’s recommendations. How much does it cost to enroll in an eDegree Program?
Answer: Tuition rates and fees for eDegree programs are no different than for programs taken on campus. These rates are updated regularly by GTCC. Click this Tuition and Fees link for the most current rates and fees. You can pay all of your fees online through WebAdvisor.
Can I take developmental math, reading, or writing classes online?
These classes are called Pre-Curriculum These classes are designed to give students the opportunity to brush up on their basic skills in each area so they enter their chosen academic program with greater skills to succeed. Because they are tailored to the individual needs of students they must be taken on campus.
Do I have to be in my online class at a certain time?
Online and eDegree students MUST follow their syllabus guidelines and course assignment deadlines given by individual instructors. All participation expectations are defined by your instructor. You will most likely have weekly assignments due along with weekly participation expectations for discussion and collaboration through the entire semester. Will I need to purchase textbooks and other course materials?
The GTCC bookstore makes it easy for students to purchase their course materials at a campus bookstore or the Online Bookstore. Click this Ordering Books tutorial link for directions to order your books online. All required books and materials are described on the bookstore ordering web page. Your instructor will also provide guidance about textbooks and resources in the syllabus.
Will I need to come to campus and take my exams?
Online and eDegree students MUST follow their syllabus guidelines for taking tests and exams. There may be some courses that will require you to take a live proctored test at a designated testing center. You will need to consult with your instructor directly for detailed directions on taking proctored exams and the options available to you.
I have to take placement tests are there study materials that I can use to prepare?
Yes, the Practice Test & Review information is located on the Placement Testing web page. They offer online courses for review to assist you in your preparation of taking the placement test, whether it is the first time, or you are considering retesting.
How do I know which placement tests to take and where to take them?
Online and eDegree students MUST follow their syllabus guidelines for contacting their instructor(s) during office hours. There may be different days, times, and ways of contact for each instructor you have. You can also send a message to your instructor from your Moodle classroom using the “participants” link on the left menu.
Is my degree/certificate from my eDegree program the same as a traditionally earned degree/certificate?
Yes, Guilford Technical Community College academic programs are regionally accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (COC-SACS) to award industry certificates, diplomas, and Associate degrees. For more information on GTCC Accreditation click here.
